What will happen to science funding in 2011?

What will the new congress mean for science and technology funding and innovation?  In his State of the Union address this week, President Obama discussed the importance of innovation for driving the American economy.  President Obama specifically mentioned that his budget will include investment in “biomedical research, information technology, and especially clean energy technology” to continue to support basic research that companies do not have economic motivation to do.

However, as Recovery Act funding ends, will research agencies see funding levels maintained?  With Republicans in control of the House of Representatives, the budget is sure to be a fight.  As scientists, we can probably agree that science funding is important.  However, will the argument that innovation drives economic recovery hold weight in Congress?  President Obama is scheduled to release his budget on Feb. 14, and then the discussion should begin.
